Teachings in Hindu dharma strongly state that every being has a soul which is a reflection of the supreme soul called Paramatma. The Supreme Soul is the one and only God. (All other gods are his manifestations. That topic is subject for detailed discussion, another time).
If every being has a soul, a piece of Supreme Soul in them, why all of us are not divine? Why are we not powerful? Why are these sufferings every where? The reason for this is the lack of awareness of our Self, and its downstream products. The lack of awareness is called 'Avidya' or Ignorance.
The lack of awareness of the peace within causes us to look for peace outside. The lack of awareness of the powers within causes us to crave for powers. Same is the case for love, purity and all other virtues.
Coming back to ignorance, it creates a false feeling that we are not complete and creates desires. The desires causes imaginations and imaginations are being expressed as or strongly influence actions.
For example, happiness is a state of mind when we realize we are complete, and we have everything we need to keep our life going. With out knowing this, our mind creates desires about outside stuff we don't have at present, and makes our selves believe that we will be at peace and joy, only when we get those irrelevant stuff. Remember, from child hood we were in this rat race of running behind desires and never stopped even though we got many of those. Its clear that the joy or peace we will find out side is temporary.
Imagine the desires and imaginations and our wrong beliefs, which conditions us to what we are now and decides what we are tomorrow. The load of trash which is accumulated in our mind from many years which further cover our mind and completely blocks our awareness.
Finally, if the ignorance does these much harm, why does it exist? Why didn't the benevolent creator created us with total awareness? The possible reasoning is that the Ignorance it self is not evil. It is not good or bad, just neutral as the creator himself. Its like a veil put on to make it more interesting. Like the peek-a-boo game played with children. Our aim is to search for the truth and find it later. The search may take our entire life, but it is worth it.
Let all of us be aware of our lack of awareness, ride with it knowingly, consciously remember our real nature and innate qualities, until the we awake to our true nature.
